As an experienced teacher who has worked in the field of disability and neurodiversity most of my career, I have come to recognise that whilst teaching compensatory strategies is a useful thing to do, it always felt like it was just putting a sticking plaster over an ever growing wound. As the students I worked with got older and were expected to jump over bigger and higher obstacles, their self-belief and esteem began to show cracks and anxiety would often take over. It was as though the steam roller that they had learned to keep ahead of over time with strategies were no longer enough to keep it at bay. The result was anxiety, stress, giving up and poor self-worth. So, what is the answer.
Surely it has to be a Holistic Approach to Support
At Discovering the Power of You, we focus on helping students understand their strengths and areas of challenge. Together, we identify clear desirable outcomes to help them progress in their academic studies, while building their confidence and self-belief. This holistic method ensures we address both their educational and emotional needs, empowering them to achieve their full potential. Your child is more than a set of examination grades. A love for lifetime learning and a healthy, balanced self-belief with resilience will serve them much better in the future.
Developing resilience and strong, balanced self-esteem is crucial for several reasons:
- Coping with Challenges: Resilience helps individuals navigate and recover from setbacks, stress, and adversity more effectively. This ability to bounce back is essential for maintaining mental and emotional well-being.
- Positive Self-Image: Balanced self-esteem allows individuals to have a realistic and positive view of themselves, recognizing their strengths and accepting their imperfections. This fosters self-acceptance and self-compassion.
- Improved Relationships: People with healthy self-esteem and resilience are better equipped to form and maintain positive relationships. They can communicate their needs, set boundaries, and support others without compromising their own well-being.
- Enhanced Performance: A strong sense of self-worth and resilience contributes to better academic, professional, and personal performance. Individuals are more likely to take on challenges, persist in the face of difficulties, and achieve their goals.
- Mental Health: Both resilience and balanced self-esteem are protective factors against mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and low self-worth. They provide a solid foundation for emotional stability.
- Life Satisfaction: Individuals with resilience and strong self-esteem tend to have higher life satisfaction and overall well-being. They are more likely to feel fulfilled and content with their lives.
In summary, developing resilience and balanced self-esteem is essential for thriving in various aspects of life, from personal relationships to professional endeavours, and for maintaining long-term mental and emotional health.
